Michelle McCay-Moran is a long time educator and active member of the greater Grass Valley-Nevada City community. She grew up in the SF Bay Area and is a 5th generation Californian. She graduated from UC Davis in 1989 with a degree in International Relations with minors in Spanish and Cultural Anthropology. Shortly after receiving her BA she moved to Guatemala to study and travel and migrated to southern Mexico where she received a Masters of Arts in Cultural Anthropology in 1995 at the Universidad de las Americas, Puebla, focusing her studies and fieldwork on environmental anthropology. 

Michelle has worked in education for the last 35 years including classroom teaching as college faculty, multiethnic bilingual instruction in K through 12 classes (including extensive experience in high school in middle school instruction) in Expedition Learning, Waldorf, Montessori and ESL education for all ages. She teaches in many local school programs currently, as well as running her own private Spanish language program. Alongside her family, Michelle has worked with numerous local agencies Including SYRCL, Friends of Deer Creek, the Bear-Yuba Land Trust, the Sierra Club and many more and she currently sits on the Melody Oaks Mutual Irrigation District water board as well.

As a resident of Nevada County for the last 26 years together with her husband and their three children, Michelle is passionate about EL education and the diverse opportunities it affords students in academics, character, and adventure. She brings a wealth of information and experience in community service with volunteerism, environmental activism, cultural inclusion, travel and adventure to the table. Michelle is also currently the Vice President of the Parent Teacher Crew (PTC) at SAEL and is very pleased support the SAEL community today and into the future.
